Nokia Perimeter Networks Are Revolutionizing Public Safety Communication

Public Safety Agencies Require Reliable Communication

Equipping public safety teams with the right tools and technologies is crucial for faster and more effective emergency decision-making. With the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters and other crises, it’s more important than ever to provide first responders with the means to communicate, coordinate, and respond swiftly to protect lives and property.

Traditional voice-centric communication systems like land mobile radio (LMR) and private mobile radio (PMR) have served their purpose. Still, the digital age is bringing about a significant transformation in mission-critical communications.

Public safety teams increasingly rely on mobile broadband communication networks to enhance their situational awareness and decision-making capabilities. This shift from voice-centric to data-driven communication provides valuable tools for sharing information in the field and with control centers, ultimately reducing risks and enabling better-informed decisions.

Advancing Technology Results In Fewer Lives Lost

The world is experiencing a rise in natural disasters, primarily driven by climate change. In fact, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), natural disasters have multiplied exponentially between 1970 and 2019. These disasters, including intense tropical storms, heat waves, and forest fires, pose significant public safety challenges.

However, during this same period, innovations in early warning systems and disaster management have emerged, so while there has been an increase in the number of disasters occurring annually, there has also been a significant decrease in lives lost. Real-time access to environmental data and advanced communication technologies have enabled organizations to issue early warnings, prepare the public, and execute disaster prevention strategies, such as early evacuations.

While early warnings are crucial, emergencies and disasters can still occur. Maintaining connectivity among public safety teams becomes a high priority when they do. Quick and efficient communication, including push-to-talk voice, data, and video sharing, over 4G/LTE and 5G networks is essential for effectively managing search and rescue operations.

However, reliance on digital technologies comes with a significant challenge: communication becomes exceedingly difficult when the telecommunications network infrastructure is damaged or destroyed. In these situations, a resilient and portable solution – like the Nokia Perimeter Network – is necessary to allow first responders and emergency workers to begin and maintain their mission.

Nokia Perimeter Network Offers Low Latency and High Performance

Nokia Perimeter Network is a solution designed to address the unique communication needs of public safety and defense sectors. It provides secure, mission-critical 4G/LTE or 5G network connectivity in areas where coverage is unavailable, damaged, or limited. With a coverage range of up to 35 kilometers and the capacity to connect up to 25,000 users, the Nokia Perimeter Network ensures that first-response teams can reliably share voice, video, and data even in the most challenging environments.

The solution is lightweight, can be powered by a portable generator, and is relatively quick to set up and deploy, enabling it to be up and running within just 60 minutes of arrival at a site. Its embedded 4G/LTE or 5G core network with Nokia Radio Access Network (RAN) components guarantees high performance and low latency in a closed mobile broadband network.

It can also bridge coverage gaps during disaster recovery efforts, support search and rescue missions, and augment coverage and capacity during high-traffic events like outdoor festivals. It operates seamlessly in remote and underserved locations, utilizing cable, satellite, or microwave technologies for backhaul to an operator’s macro network. In situations where road access is impossible, it can even be transported by air, ensuring vital connectivity for critical operations.

By leveraging the Nokia Perimeter Network, public safety teams gain access to essential communication tools. They can share videos and data, collaborate using Nokia Group Communications, and utilize Nokia Drone Networks for beyond line-of-sight vision, providing valuable insights into hazardous areas and enhancing their ability to locate people and items swiftly.
