Nokia’s 1830 Optical Line Systems

Nokia’s 1830 Optical Line Systems

Enhance Optical Fiber Capacity For Amplified Signals

Nokia’s 1830 series of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical line systems integrate wavelength-specific coherent optics utilized in transponders, packet-optical switches, and compact modular routers and interconnect them across optical fiber networks, irrespective of topology or distance.

These WDM line systems dramatically enhance the overall capacity of optical fibers. They amplify optical signals for transport across various distances, ranging from metropolitan to ultra-long haul and subsea routes. Additionally, they facilitate wavelength manipulation, enabling the addition/dropping of wavelengths and switching them at intermediate nodes to diverse directions and destinations. Operating at the photonic or optical layer, these systems offer substantial cost and power savings compared to digital implementations.

Nokia’s 1830 series presents a spectrum of application-tailored platforms supporting WDM optical line system functions. These platforms include a telco-optimized chassis accommodating coherent transponders and a compact modular chassis optimized for data centers that exclusively supports optical line system functions. Notably, the same 1830 WDM optical line system equipment can seamlessly function across these platforms, offering network operators deployment versatility, common spare utilization, and operational streamlining.

Building Blocks Of Nokia’s WDM Optical Line Systems

Nokia’s 1830 WDM optical line systems offer a comprehensive array of functionalities and capabilities:

WDM Multiplexing

By combining multiple wavelength-specific coherent optics into a single optical fiber, the system significantly enhances the total data-carrying capacity of the fiber, achieving a hundredfold increase compared to single-wavelength operation.

Optical Amplifiers

These amplify the power levels of wavelengths traversing the optical fiber, extending reach in a highly cost and power-efficient manner. Erbium-doped optical amplifiers (EDFAs) enable end-to-end optical connections spanning over a thousand kilometers. They can be augmented with Raman amplification for even greater extension, covering many thousands of kilometers.

Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs) and Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS)

These complement WDM multiplexing by selectively adding/dropping any wavelength or multiple wavelengths of any speed and spectral width. They also enable wavelength switching between multiple optical fibers and directions.

C+L Band Operation

This expands the optical fiber spectrum available for coherent wavelength transport, doubling the total WDM capacity of an optical network. WDM multiplexing, optical amplification, and ROADM/WSS functions are supported across both C-band and L-bands, offering continuous operation.

Dynamic Gain Equalization (DGE)

Integrated into optical amplifiers and ROADMs, DGE ensures that the power levels of all WDM channels operate optimally, maximizing performance.

Optical Protection Switching (OPS)

OPS facilitates rapid redirection of single or multiple channels to an alternative fiber path, providing 1+1 traffic protection against fiber cuts or equipment failures. This reduces network costs by eliminating the need for duplicate 1:1 transport interfaces.

Nokia’s iROADM/iR Portfolio

Nokia’s integrated ROADM (iROADM/iR) family presents a leading-edge assortment of compact and purpose-optimized ROADMs. Their iROADM solutions combine various functionalities within a single line card, including wavelength switches, optical amplifiers, optical channel monitors (OCM), and dynamic gain equalization. This consolidation facilitates enhanced nodal automation and streamlines deployment and sparing processes.

Nokia’s iROADM/iR Portfolio of Products

Within their iROADM/iR family, Nokia offers a variety of options encompassing 4, 9, 20, and 32-direction wavelength switching. These solutions support integrated DGE functionality and provide adaptable ITU-T WDM grid spacings with flex grid granularity. This versatility empowers flexible wavelength add/drop and switching capabilities, catering to diverse needs ranging from small nodes requiring limited wavelength add/drop across a few directions to large core nodes demanding high add/drop port counts across numerous fiber directions. Additionally, multiple stand-alone or integrated OTDR options are available to furnish essential tools for testing and troubleshooting optical fiber links.

The iROADM/iR family of products includes:

iR4

Optimized for access/metro applications, it features up to 4 switching directions in the C-band and supports both FlexGrid (C-F) and classic ROADM Mux/Demux configurations.

iR9

Ideal for metro/regional/long-haul (LH) applications, offering up to 9 switching directions in the C-band. Compatible with FlexGrid (C-F) and classic ROADM Mux/Demux setups.

iROADM20

Suited for metro/regional/LH applications, providing up to 16 switching directions in the C-band. Supports CDC-F, C-F, and classic ROADM Mux/Demux configurations.

iROADM32

Designed for metro/regional/LH applications, offering up to 32 switching directions in both C and L-Bands. Compatible with CDC-F, C-F, and classic ROADM Mux/Demux setups.

Multicast Switch

It is intended for high-degree nodes with numerous add/drop channels. Available options include 8 and 16 degrees, supporting up to 16 add/drop channels. It supports CDC-F switching.

MxN WSS

Designed for high-degree nodes with multiple add/drop channels, it supports up to 24 add/drop channels and CDC-F switching. Options include 8 and 16 degrees.

Nokia’s ROADMs seamlessly integrate with multicast switches (MCS) or MxN Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS) to accommodate various wavelength-switching functionalities. These include Colorless-Flexgrid (C-F), Colorless and Directionless (CD-F), and Colorless, Directionless, and Contentionless (CDC-F) configurations.

The iROADM32 offers support for both C and L band operations. Depending on fiber type and scaling needs, it can be deployed in C-only, L-only, or upgradeable C+L band configurations. Additionally, it supports in-service upgrades to C+L band operation, ensuring adaptability to evolving network requirements.

Support For C+L Band Operation Maximizes WDM Network Scale

Traditionally, optical transport networks have primarily utilized WDM within the C-band of optical fibers, typically spanning from 1530 to 1565nm within the optical spectrum. This range provided 4800GHz of WDM spectrum, determining the maximum number of WDM channels per fiber based on the spectral width allocated to each channel.

Expanding operations into the L-band effectively doubles the available WDM spectrum, extending from 1570 to 1611nm. This expansion empowers network operators to significantly scale their optical networks without the immediate necessity of lighting a new fiber pair or deploying additional fiber cables.

Nokia’s WDM optical line systems offer versatile options encompassing C-band and L-band functionalities. C-band-only systems are ideal for applications where ultimate scalability isn’t imperative, while L-band-only systems serve fiber types where C-band WDM operation faces limitations or isn’t feasible.

Additionally, Nokia supports C+L line systems, facilitating in-service migration to a broader WDM spectrum of 9600GHz. This enhancement effectively doubles the network scale, making it especially advantageous for high-capacity networks and applications.
