Project Scope + Objectives

Petrobras embarked on an ambitious project to deploy LTE networks across its offshore and onshore facilities, aiming to connect 29 offshore oil platforms and 17 onshore facilities, including refineries, gas processing plants, warehouses, and ports. This initiative is part of the company’s strategic plan to enhance connectivity, improve production efficiency, reduce costs, and bolster safety measures by preventing failures and workforce accidents.

Technologies + Solutions Deployed

Service Provider as a Platform (SPaaP)

Petrobras adopted the SPaaP approach, enabling efficient management and operation of network services tailored to the specific needs of its sprawling and diverse facilities.

Nokia’s Modular Private Wireless (MPW)

The core of the connectivity solution was Nokia’s Modular Private Wireless (MPW), providing reliable and secure communication across Petrobras’ operational sites. This technology supported the extensive coverage required for the remote and expansive offshore platforms.

4G Frequency Bands

Utilizing the 4G frequency bands, including the 700 MHz and 1.8 GHz bands acquired by Telefônica Brasil, the deployment ensured wide-reaching and robust wireless connectivity crucial for the vast maritime operations.

Benefits + Outcomes

The implementation of private LTE networks has significantly revolutionized Petrobras’ operations. Enhanced connectivity has led to more efficient production processes, real-time data transmission from remote locations, and improved decision-making capabilities. Notably, the new network infrastructure has substantially reduced the risk of operational failures and accidents, contributing to a safer working environment.

The successful deployment on 11 offshore platforms and several onshore facilities is just the beginning, with plans to extend the LTE connectivity to all 46 sites by the end of 2024. The initiative underscores Petrobras’ commitment to leveraging digital transformation as a means to achieve operational excellence and sustainability goals.

The project was successfully executed by Nokia and Petrobras (along with Telefonica) without channel partner involvement.
