Nokia Digital Automation Cloud Provides Public Safety Officials With Crucial Data

Public Safety Is Moving Toward A Fully-Digital Model

In today’s digital age, we’re more connected than ever. Most of us are familiar with the ways we can use devices on a personal level to speak with colleagues and loved ones around the world and complete a variety of tasks anywhere, anytime. But as technology continues to improve and expand, organizations across almost every industry are developing innovative new ways to create automated and integrated digital landscapes to improve their operations.

NDAC for Public Safety Emergency Operations Centers

In the public safety sector, there have been incredible transformations in the ways that first responders and law enforcement officials conduct their daily business in and around the territories they protect and serve. Long gone are the days of officers on patrol only having two-way radios at their disposal and having to complete incident reports on hardcopy paper.  Law enforcement agencies now have an incredible amount of data at their fingertips, like public area video surveillance and video analysis for situational assessment and intelligent traffic management systems.

NDAC Supports Officials with Search and Rescue Efforts

With the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (NDAC), public safety officials can utilize a private platform to improve operational and cost efficiencies. Additionally, the Nokia Drone Network can be deployed to provide live-streaming aerial insights to monitor a variety of situations, including large events, traffic, construction site safety, and environmental quality monitoring.

Rescue Operations

When first responders head out on a search and rescue mission, the more information they have the better. In the past, rescuers had to fan out and search the ground in person, while helicopters or small planes flew overhead with those on board trying to look for any obvious clues from quite a distance. With NDAC and Nokia Drone Networks, first responders are now able to get overhead views of large areas with thermal and zoom capabilities.

Additionally, they can use drones to create terrain and trail maps, develop route guidance after natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes, deliver audio warnings, and even deliver first aid kits before personnel are able to reach them on foot.

NDAC Supports Traffic and Crowd Control

Traffic Safety and Event Monitoring

In a large crowd or busy traffic situation, police drones help officers patrol streets and provide crowd security by monitoring behavior. Real-time analytics provide officers and dispatchers with insight to make quick, well-informed decisions at a moment’s notice.

NDAC and Drones Improve Situational Awareness in Fire Prevention and Perimeter Safety

By implementing and deploying drone fleets, public safety agencies can use wirelessly connected sensors and cameras to monitor facilities or a wide range of issues, including intruders, leaks, and overheated areas while also getting an aerial view of accidents and disasters. These capabilities allow first responders to enter a situation with a greater level of awareness and can help dispatchers and command central coordinate resource allocation.

Prevention and Inspection

During a fire response situation, time is of the essence, but keeping responders safe is a top priority. Live-streaming video allows firefighters and their command to get a better understanding of the scope of the situation so that they can allocate resources, evaluate risks, and make important decisions without putting personnel directly in harm’s way.

Drones and sensors can also aid in fire prevention by alerting command to the presence of hazardous gasses and dangerous leaks. With rural and forest fire fighting, drones can help locate high-risk areas and hot spots so that preventive measures can be taken to minimize the risk of fire spread. In cities, drones can be used for safety surveillance, facility checks, and even damage inspection for insurance purposes.

Nokia Drone Networks

Finally, the Nokia Drone Networks can be deployed for use at closed or secured sites to help monitor the perimeter of the facility, as well as for border patrol.

Meanwhile, NDAC affords public safety agencies and municipalities a flexible, hybrid model for private network services and edge computing for everything from small, targeted connectivity to large-scale international projects. NDAC operations are simple and easy to both use and expand and don’t require any specialized telecommunications efforts.

Nokia Saving Lives

In an effort to provide support to rescue personnel during emergency response operations and as part of their commitment to the UN Sustainable Development goals, Nokia has created Nokia Saving Lives – a non-profit initiative that provides local high-capacity networks free of charge.

The Nokia Saving Lives team works in close cooperation with the local rescue organization and operator to deploy the system within minutes of arrival. This network provides responders with both push-to-talk and push-to-video communications and also provides a connection for HD and thermal Drone video streaming. This streaming video enables operations leaders to gain valuable situational awareness, locate missing persons, and identify suitable foot and vehicle travel routes.
