Unlocking the Potential of 5G-Advanced

Nokia's 5G-Advanced Dimensions

Bridging Digital Divides and Enhancing Precision

The networking world is on the brink of a significant transformation, and at the heart of this evolution lies 5G-Advanced. Nokia’s recent Technology Vision for 2030 paints a picture of a future where humans are augmented in unprecedented ways, and the digital and physical realms merge seamlessly. The transformative power of 5G-Advanced – set to take center stage by 2025 – offers a four-dimensional approach to connectivity that will revolutionize industries and our daily lives.

These four dimensions are the “Four E’s”:

Operational Excellence

Nokia's 5G-Advanced Dimensions

Tailoring the Four E’s to Unique Needs

The beauty of the Four E’s is their adaptability. Nokia understands that different service providers and industries have unique requirements. Whichever of the Four E’s is set to be emphasized, 5G-Advanced can be tailored to create a customized solution.

Experience

5G-Advanced promises to make digital experiences truly immersive, bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds. Extended reality (XR) technologies allow participation in board meetings while commuting or exploring vacation destinations before booking. The lines between in-person and virtual interactions will blur, creating a new era of mixed-reality events. Moreover, 5G-Advanced will enable exciting tech-powered sports like drone racing. This transformation will be achieved through features such as radio resource optimization, mobility enhancements, device power savings, and edge cloud capabilities.

Expansion

While broadband has become ubiquitous in many areas, there are still “white spots” without coverage. 5G-Advanced aims to bridge these gaps, extending broadband into underserved regions and empowering critical networks like smart grids. Farmers can use 5G-Advanced for irrigation system monitoring, and new consumer wearables will benefit from low-cost, low-data-rate connections. Drones will take to the skies thanks to beamforming techniques, and interconnected devices will thrive through sidelink technologies.

Extension

Beyond providing coverage, 5G-Advanced will offer lifelines to industries and applications previously beyond traditional networks’ reach. From supporting industrial networks to enabling drone fleets and connecting interlinked devices, 5G-Advanced will help to enable an even more interconnected world.

Operational Excellence

Operational excellence will be a hallmark of 5G-Advanced, building upon the foundations of network slicing, wireline-wireless convergence, and enhanced mobility. Energy efficiency will be a top priority, with AI and machine learning delivering substantial energy savings. Network robustness will minimize downtime and inconsistencies, and providers will have new ways to manage devices, ensuring optimal user experiences.

The Key Role of 5G-Advanced and Uplink

Uplink data is becoming increasingly crucial in our evolving digital landscape. With the rise of live streaming, high-quality video creation, and the Internet of Things (IoT), devices are uploading data more than ever. While 5G brought enhancements like UL Carrier aggregation and EUTRA-NR Dual Connection (EN-DC), 5G-Advanced steps in to address remaining uplink challenges, especially at the cell edge and for specific segments like Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and industrial IoT (IIoT) devices.

5G-Advanced focuses on two key aspects to enhance uplink capabilities: coverage and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO). It extends network coverage for better performance, even in challenging cell-edge conditions. Dynamic waveform adjustments and improved device power efficiency ensure optimal performance. In FWA deployments, 5G-Advanced allows the network to support up to eight simultaneous data streams and transmit antennas to boost uplink capacity significantly.

While 5G networks excel at providing information, 5G-Advanced will expand beyond mere communication. It will provide precise location data and accurate timing, making it ideal for applications beyond traditional networking. The ability to pinpoint objects within centimeters and events within nanoseconds will enable a wide array of new possibilities.

Super-Accurate Positioning

5G-Advanced’s super-accurate positioning capabilities are best exemplified in industrial automation. Robots, assembly lines, and logistics systems will seamlessly interact thanks to precise positioning and low-latency communication. Unlike traditional GPS, 5G-Advanced’s positioning doesn’t rely on satellites, ensuring accuracy indoors and in challenging environments.

Precision Timing

Exact timing is essential for financial transactions – such as automatic stock trading – and other professional applications. 5G-Advanced offers timing resilience, maintaining precise timing even during satellite interruptions. It connects to multiple timing sources, including ground-based atomic clocks, and distributes this information with sub-microsecond accuracy. With absolute timing, professional audio productions – such as concerts – can move into a wireless landscape and will no longer depend on cables to connect speakers to ensure that audio is played at precisely the right moment. Similarly, applications such as tele-surgery will move closer to becoming a reality as robots can depend on 5G-Advanced to receive timing accuracy for the most delicate operations.

Unlocking New Possibilities

5G-Advanced is set to unlock a world of possibilities, breaking down communication boundaries and enabling users to leverage location and timing to a new level. This single infrastructure network will cater to diverse needs, from data transmission to super-accurate positioning and sub-microsecond timing accuracy.

As 5G-Advanced advances through the 3GPP standards, it is poised to redefine connectivity over the next decade. Release 18, the first phase of 5G-Advanced, is expected in 2024, setting the stage for a new era of networking.
