Nokia Unveils Powerful Enhancements for AirScale

Revolutionizing Mobile Networks with AI

In June 2023, Nokia announced a groundbreaking set of enhancements for its AirScale product line. These advancements are set to redefine the capabilities of mobile networks by leveraging the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). With the introduction of ultra-performance baseband and control cards, an expanded radio portfolio, and an intelligent network management solution, Nokia is solidifying its position at the forefront of the industry.

Nokia’s enhancements to the AirScale portfolio mark a significant milestone in the evolution of mobile networks. By integrating AI capabilities, Nokia has provided innovative solutions to manage traffic growth, enhance performance, and improve sustainability, while the modular and scalable nature of AirScale ensures compatibility with O-RAN and Cloud RAN deployments. Additionally, these enhanced solutions underline Nokia’s commitment to sustainability, with substantial improvements in energy efficiency.

Next-Generation Baseband Capacity Cards: Levante and Lodos

The two new cutting-edge 5G-Advanced baseband capacity cards released by Nokia are Levante and Lodos. Powered by the latest ReefShark System-on-Chip (SoC) technology, these cards offer unparalleled performance, scalability, and energy efficiency.

Levante

Levante, a 4G/5G capacity card, doubles the number of supported Massive MIMO cells while reducing energy consumption by up to 60 percent. It also enables site configurations up to three times larger.

Lodos

Similarly, Lodos is a high-performance 4G/5G capacity card that enhances scalability and decreases energy consumption by up to 30 percent and is designed to support long-term network evolution and ensure investment protection.

Ultra-Performance Baseband Control Card: Ponente

Nokia’s Ponente is a revolutionary 2G-5G control card combining ultra-performance and extreme energy efficiency. With up to 100 percent higher throughput capacity, Ponente accommodates increased traffic growth and provides high-speed site connectivity while reducing energy consumption by up to 80 percent.

It also offers future-proof capabilities for 5G Standalone and 5G-Advanced deployments while incorporating Trusted Platform Module (TPM) technology, ensuring enhanced security with hardware-processed security keys.

Expanded Radio Portfolio: Pandion and Shikra

On the radio side, Nokia is expanding its portfolio by introducing Pandion, the latest generation of FDD remote radio heads, and Shikra, advanced small cells for outdoor and indoor scenarios. Pandion supports up to three FDD bands in a single, optimized form factor, catering to various deployment needs. Shikra complements Nokia’s comprehensive portfolio and addresses the demand for small-cell solutions, enhancing coverage and capacity in diverse environments.

MantaRay: Intelligent Network Management and Optimization Solutions

Nokia’s MantaRay is an innovative portfolio of network management and optimization solutions. MantaRay leverages the power of AI and Machine Learning (ML) to enable intelligent, efficient, and cognitive RAN operations.

The portfolio includes MantaRay Network Management, a future platform for purpose-built RAN, Cloud RAN, and Core Network management. It also features MantaRay SON (Self-Organizing Networks) with advanced AI and cognitive capabilities and MantaRay RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller), an O-RAN compliant near real-time controller. Additionally, using AI and ML, MantaRay Energy optimizes energy consumption in radio access networks.
