A New Home for Nokia Bell Labs in New Brunswick, NJ

A Legacy of Innovation

Nokia recently announced plans to relocate its Murray Hill campus in New Jersey to a cutting-edge research and development (R&D) facility in New Brunswick by 2028. This strategic move aims to position Nokia Bell Labs at the forefront of innovation, fostering collaboration and breakthroughs in emerging technologies while contributing to New Jersey’s rich legacy of innovation.

For over 80 years, Nokia Bell Labs’ Murray Hill campus has been a hub for groundbreaking discoveries, from the world’s first transistor to advancements in cellular and satellite communications, Unix, and contemporary research in AI, 6G, and industrial automation. Nishant Batra, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Nokia, emphasizes the importance of preserving the legacy as they transition to a new facility designed to meet the demands of the next century.

Building for the Future

Since its formation as Bell Labs in 1925, Nokia Bell Labs has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the modern telecommunications industry. Since joining the Nokia family in 2016, Bell Labs has sustained its commitment to cutting-edge research and innovation, driving advancements in 5G connectivity, Internet of Things (IoT) expansion, and artificial intelligence. Their partnership with top academic institutions and world-renowned experts in their field – including Nobel Prize winners – emphasizes their dedication to conducting groundbreaking research and continuing to advance the communications field, among others.

At the heart of Nokia Bell Labs’ research model is collaboration. The decision to move to New Brunswick is influenced by the desire to be near academic centers, established industry leaders, and dynamic startup ventures. This move will facilitate a tightly knit, dynamic campus, enabling research teams to collaborate on disruptive technologies, including quantum, photonics, optical research, 6G, AI, and industrial automation.

The new R&D facility, set to break ground in 2025, is a collaboration between Nokia, SJP Properties, New Brunswick Development Corporation (DEVCO), the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), and the City of New Brunswick. The building will aim for a minimum LEED Gold certification, contributing to Nokia’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 and a 50% reduction by 2030. Modern technology will be leveraged to optimize space and enhance efficiency, aligning with Nokia’s forward-looking approach.

Government officials have expressed enthusiasm about Nokia’s move to New Brunswick. Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the state’s commitment to fostering an environment where companies like Nokia can flourish, contributing to the innovation ecosystem and generating high-quality jobs. The support extends to the federal level, with Alan Davidson from the Department of Commerce highlighting the importance of companies like Nokia investing in America’s tech industry.

New Brunswick Mayor Jim Cahill sees Nokia’s commitment as a testament to the city’s potential, collaborative spirit, and forward-thinking attitude. The venture is expected to not only bring economic opportunities to the city but also create a hub of creativity and expertise, contributing to the continued growth and success of New Brunswick.

Strengthening Innovation and The Economic Ecosystem

Ronald G. Rios, Middlesex County Commissioner Director, welcomes Nokia as the newest tenant of the HELIX, emphasizing the county’s dedication to cultivating a sustainable economic ecosystem through strategic partnerships. Tim Sullivan, NJEDA Chief Executive Officer, sees Nokia’s decision as proof of New Jersey’s re-emergence as a leader in innovation, aligning with Governor Murphy’s vision for the state.

In addition to the new facility, Nokia announced a venture studio in New Jersey to unlock the commercial potential of Nokia Bell Labs’ innovations. Collaborating with Celesta Capital and America’s Frontier Fund, Nokia aims to build and invest in innovations that support the next generation of critical technology for the U.S.

Nokia will unveil details about the new facility on December 11 at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. With federal, state, and local government officials in attendance, the event symbolizes the next chapter in Nokia’s storied history, reaffirming its commitment to innovation, collaboration, and technological leadership in the years to come.

Nokia’s decision to relocate to New Brunswick marks a pivotal moment in its innovation legacy. As they embark on this transformative journey, the company remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of technology, fostering collaboration, and contributing to the vibrant ecosystem of New Jersey’s innovation hub. The future shines bright for Nokia Bell Labs in its new home as it continues to shape the technological landscape for generations to come.
