Microwave Service Switches (MSS) Power Next-Generation Networks

Nokia Wavence Microwave Service Switches Expand 5G Into Rural Areas

As demand for 5G service grows, the capacity requirements of our communication networks are significantly increasing. To accommodate these increases, communications services providers seek cost-effective solutions while providing high-capacity backhaul. By utilizing microwave backhaul, they’re able to not only meet their increased usage demands but also extend the reach of their 5G networks into more rural areas.

What Is Nokia Wavence?

To support next-generation 5G microwave networks, Nokia has released its Wavence portfolio of complete microwave solutions. This portfolio includes the equipment ideal for maximizing radio link performance, increasing reach, and supporting advanced packet networking. Additionally, the Wavence portfolio provides short-haul, long-haul, E-Band, and SDN-based management solutions.

Utilizing the latest technology for maintaining performance without increasing power consumption, the Wavence portfolio can contribute toward a zero-emissions achievement. They also save 30% more energy than a traditional microwave solution as the portfolio solutions require a reduced number of units and fewer air conditioning requirements.

What Are Microwave Service Switches?

Microwave Service Switches (MSS) are devices used in telecommunications networks to route data and voice traffic over microwave frequencies. They are designed to provide fast, reliable, and cost-effective wireless connectivity between network elements. Microwave service switches use microwave radio links to establish point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connections, enabling service providers to deliver high-speed data and voice services to their customers. These switches help to overcome the challenges of providing network connectivity in remote or hard-to-reach areas, and they play an essential role in modern telecommunications networks.

Within the Nokia Wavence portfolio, there are a variety of MSS options, including:

  • MSS-1, MSS-4, MSS-8: Provides Carrier Ethernet networking and aggregation and demarcation functions while being optimized to reduce space and power consumption.
  • MSS-E and MSS-HE: These are high-performance, fanless indoor units that provide carrier ethernet networking, L3VPN, and aggregation and demarcation functions
  • 9500 Microwave Packet Radio: The microwave packet radio family is designed for short-haul applications and operates in the standard frequency bands and is designed to provide high-capacity reliable backhaul for wireless 3G and 4G macro cells and segments applications.

How Do Microwave Service Switches Relate To Ultra-Broadband Transceivers (UBT)?

Ultra-broadband transceivers are devices used in telecommunications networks to transmit and receive high-speed data over wide frequency ranges. They typically operate in the microwave or millimeter-wave frequency bands and provide a means for transmitting large amounts of data over long distances.

In a microwave network setting, the ultra-broadband transceiver acts as the radio component, transmitting and receiving data over microwave frequencies. The microwave service switch provides routing and management functions, allowing service providers to control data flow and voice traffic over the network.

In a typical deployment, the ultra-broadband transceivers are installed at various points in the network, such as cell towers, base stations, and access points. They establish point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connections over the microwave frequency band, transmitting and receiving data to and from the microwave service switch. The microwave service switch acts as a hub, receiving data from multiple transceivers and routing it to the appropriate destination over the network.
